What’s the difference between PRP and PRF?

The medical aesthetic field is ever evolving and always setting higher standards in treatments and technology. All these medical terms have people confused on which one is best, which one lasts longer, are they candidates for the treatment? We are going to break it down and simply answer all your questions.

PRP (platelet rich plasma)

PRP was the original collagen bio-stimulator breakthrough in the medical aesthetic field. PRP is created from a small amount of blood and separating the platelets from other components, a concentrated plasma rich in growth factors is obtained.

PRF (platelet rich fibrin)

PRF came to light years after discovering PRP. PRF is similar to PRP, in the way it utilizes the patient's blood, but the processing method is different. PRF is an autologous blood product obtained by centrifuging the blood without anticoagulants, resulting in a fibrin clot that contains platelets. Basically, PRF is superior byproduct treatment compared to PRP. PRF is 100% pure free of any additives. The latest in technology is PRFM (Bio-filler, aka EZ Gel) is highest in growth factors and lasts longer since it’s engineered into a gel-like, filler consistency. We will have a separate blog diving deeper into the difference and benefits of PRFM.

WHY IS PRF BETTER?

PRF delivers about 8-10 times more growth factors than PRP. PRP’s extraction process involves additives and chemicals to thin the blood, while PRF is extracted in a process that is completely natural and unmodified, with no additives PRF triggers more blood flow, which essentially gets better results than PRP. PRF also spreads more slowly when administered, which means that the body is able to take advantage of the growth factors more efficiently.

IS PRF SAFE?

Since PRF is derived from your own blood platelets, you can’t have any adverse reactions. PRF is chemical and additive free during the spinning/centrifuge process making it 100% naturally derived treatment. Everyone is a candidate for any PRF injection treatments. Mild swelling in the injecting area is normal and expected, each individual is different therefore everyone’s body heals at a different pace. Swelling subsides usually within 5 days or may take up to 14 days.
